The Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill would require public bodies to act to improve the UK’s long‑term wellbeing across environmental, social, economic and cultural areas. It would require them to set wellbeing objectives, publish future generations impact assessments and consider preventative spending, and it would also bring private companies into scope to consider wellbeing. It would establish a UK Commissioner for Future Generations and a Joint Parliamentary Committee to oversee progress, and extend these duties to public service contracts.
The bill is currently at Committee stage in the Lords, where its clauses are being examined clause‑by‑clause after having had first and second readings in early 2020. If progressed, it would move to consideration in the House of Commons.
