The Bill would allow members of the House of Lords (peers) to stop being Lords either by retiring or if they stop attending regularly or are convicted of a crime. It sets out how a peer can cease to be a member, with the aim of keeping the Lords’ membership active and accountable.
The bill has completed its Lords stages and is progressing in the Commons, where the second reading is planned for 1 March 2013.
