A Bill to enable local planning authorities to require the granting of planning permission prior to the demolition or change of use of premises or land used or formerly used as a public house or local independent shop, to enable local planning authorities to require the granting of planning permission if premises or land will be used for a supermarket; and for connected purposes.
House of Commons
26 April 2013
The Local Services (Planning) Bill would give local planning authorities the power to require planning permission before demolishing pubs or small, independent shops or before changing their use. It would also require planning permission if such premises or land are to be used for a supermarket. The aim is to help protect high streets by giving councils more control over what happens to these local premises.
The bill is currently at the 2nd reading in the House of Commons. If it advances, it would move to committee for detailed scrutiny, followed by further readings in both Houses.
