A Bill to facilitate the transfer of asylum seekers to the safe country nearest their country of origin.
House of Commons
15 May 2014
This Bill would create a formal process to transfer asylum seekers from the UK to the nearest safe country to their country of origin. It aims to speed up removals by designating the nearest safe country as the transfer destination and setting out how such transfers would be carried out. The provisions would need to fit with UK and international law and protect people’s rights.
The Bill is currently at the second reading in the House of Commons. If it progresses, it would move to committee stage, then to further readings, before going to the House of Lords.
Generated 21 February 2026
This Bill was withdrawn and will not progress any further.
This Bill was presented to Parliament on 24 June 2013. The second reading was expected on 28 February 2014 but was withdrawn.
