A Bill to provide that a criminal reconvicted for an offence on a second or further occasion receives a longer sentence than for the first such offence.
House of Commons
15 May 2014
The Sentencing Escalator Bill would require that someone reconvicted for the same offence on a second or later occasion receives a longer sentence than for their first conviction. It is intended to reflect repeat offending in penalties and to deter escalation. The bill would apply when judges sentence someone after a reconviction for the same offence.
The bill is at the second reading in the House of Commons; if it progresses, it would move to committee stage and then further stages in the Commons and Lords.
