A Bill to entitle employees to take a period of leave to fulfil certain caring responsibilities in respect of dependants; and for connected purposes
House of Lords
12 May 2016
This Lords Bill would give employees a statutory right to take a period of leave to care for dependants. It aims to support people who need to look after ill or otherwise dependent family members by providing a clear entitlement to leave rather than relying on company policies, and would set out who qualifies, how long the leave lasts, and the protections for workers taking it.
The bill is currently at Second Reading in the Lords. If it progresses, it will move to Committee stage for detailed scrutiny, then to Report and Third Reading, and then proceed to the House of Commons.
Generated 21 February 2026
