A Bill to require assessment of a benefit claimant’s circumstances before the implementation of sanctions; and for connected purposes.
House of Commons
27 February 2017
The Bill would require that a claimant’s personal circumstances are assessed before any sanctions are imposed on their benefits. It aims to prevent unfair penalties by ensuring sanctions are based on a fuller view of an individual’s situation, with related provisions to support implementation and other connected changes to welfare policy.
The Bill is at the Commons 2nd Reading. If it progresses, it will move to committee stage for detailed scrutiny and amendment.
Generated 21 February 2026
This Bill has been withdrawn and will not progress any further.
The Bill had its first reading on 29 June 2916 through the Ballot procedure. The second reading debate was adjourned on Friday 2 December 2016 and was expected to resume its second reading debate on Friday 24 February 2017 but was withdrawn.
