A Bill to amend the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to increase the sentence available to the court for those convicted of a criminal offence related to animal fighting; and for connected purposes.
House of Commons
28 April 2017
The Bill would raise the maximum sentence the court can impose for offences connected to animal fighting under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. It targets organisers, participants and those who profit from animal fights and includes additional provisions to strengthen penalties and better protect animals from cruelty.
The Bill is currently at the second reading in the House of Commons. If it passes this stage, it will move on to committee for detailed scrutiny, followed by report and third readings before moving to the Lords.
Generated 21 February 2026
This Bill was expected to have its second reading debate on Friday 12 May 2017.
However, as a General Election has now been called and Parliament will be dissolved from 3 May 2017, the Bill falls and no further action will be taken.
