The Local Authority Roads (Wildlife Protection) Bill would require local highways agencies and local transport authorities to put in place measures that protect wildlife on roads that pass through, or run beside, protected areas. It imposes a duty on those authorities to make provisions to safeguard wildlife as part of road planning and management. The aim is to reduce harm to wildlife from road traffic and promote wildlife-friendly road management near protected areas.
The bill is currently at the second reading in the House of Commons. If it moves forward, it would go to committee for detailed scrutiny, followed by further readings before possible passage to the Lords.
