House of Commons
2 December 2016
The Parental Bereavement Leave (Statutory Entitlement) Bill would create a statutory right for employees to take leave after the death of a child. It would set out who is eligible, how the leave is taken, and the protections at work during and after the leave (including any statutory pay during that period). The aim is to give grieving parents time off without putting their job at risk.
The bill is currently at its 2nd reading in the House of Commons. If it progresses, it would move to Committee stage and then later to Report and Third Reading, with further consideration in the Lords; as a Private Members’ Bill, its passage depends on parliamentary time and cross-party support.
Generated 21 February 2026
