A Bill to make provision for the creation of mutual guarantee societies, for their membership by small and medium size businesses for the purpose of lending to and by such business and for their operation; and for connected purposes.
House of Commons
24 February 2017
The Mutual Guarantee Societies Bill would create a legal framework for mutual guarantee societies, organisations where SME members back each other with guarantees to help obtain credit. It would allow small and medium-sized businesses to join these societies to lend to and borrow from other members, with rules on how they are run. The aim is to support access to finance for smaller firms and to enable alternative lending arrangements.
The bill is currently at the Second Reading in the House of Commons; if opinions are supportive, it would move to committee stage and subsequent readings.
