A Bill to enable a person to make his or her instructions concerning burial and related matters binding on their personal representative or beneficiary; to enable a person to make provision about the use of a burial space he or she acquired while living after the person’s burial; and for connected purposes.
House of Commons
28 April 2017
The Burial Rights Reform Bill would allow people to set burial instructions that must be followed by their executors or other beneficiaries after they die. It would also let someone arrange, while alive, for how a burial space they bought is used after their burial. The aim is to make burial plans clearer and legally binding.
The bill is at the second reading in the House of Commons, so it is in the early stages of scrutiny and has not yet reached committee.
Generated 21 February 2026
This Bill was expected to have its second reading debate on Friday 12 May 2017.
However, as a General Election has now been called and Parliament will be dissolved from 3 May 2017, the Bill falls and no further action will be taken.
