A Bill to make provision for the holding of referenda in relation to voting systems in local government elections
House of Lords
10 September 2019
This Bill would create a legal framework for holding referenda on the voting system used in local government elections. It would set out how such referenda are organised and who may vote, with the aim of giving people a say over how local councillors are elected.
The Bill is at the 2nd Reading in the House of Lords, having originated there. If Parliament agrees to proceed, it will move on to the committee stage for detailed examination.
Generated 21 February 2026
During second reading of the Bill on 15 December, a wide-ranging discussion took place on issues including electoral reform, proportional representation and referendums.
The 2017-2019 session of Parliament has prorogued and this Bill will make no further progress.
No recorded votes for this bill yet.
