The Bat Habitats Regulation Bill [HL] would strengthen protection for bat habitats near building sites, so bats are less likely to be harmed during development. It also proposes limiting some protections for bat habitats inside buildings used for public worship. The bill is currently at the second-reading stage in the Lords.

During second reading of the Bill on 27 April, a wide-ranging discussion took place on issues including the conservation of churches and historic buildings, the vicinity of bat habitats to proposed new buildings and the protection of other animal species.
The 2017-2019 session of Parliament has prorogued and this Bill will make no further progress.
