This Bill aims to give protections to people who live with a partner as a couple, including those who have lived as a couple in the past, even if they are not married or in a civil partnership. It sets out rules about what happens to the property of someone who dies when there is a surviving cohabitant, and includes related provisions. In short, it addresses gaps in the law for cohabiting couples both in life and on death.
The Bill originated in the Lords, with its 1st reading in 2017 and its 2nd reading in 2019. It is currently at the 2nd reading stage in the Lords.
