A Bill to make provision for Members of the House of Lords to vote in elections to the House of Commons
House of Lords
12 September 2019
This bill would extend the right to vote in general elections to Members of the House of Lords, allowing them to vote for MPs in the House of Commons. It sets out how Lords’ voting rights would operate and what conditions would apply if it becomes law.
The bill is at the second reading in the Lords. If it progresses, it would move to committee stage in the Lords, then to the Lords' report stage and third reading, before moving to the Commons for consideration.
Generated 21 February 2026
Second reading - the general debate on all aspects of the Bill - took place on 22 July.
The 2017-2019 session of Parliament has prorogued and this Bill will make no further progress.
