The Parliamentary Constituencies (Amendment) Bill would change how many parliamentary constituencies there are in the United Kingdom and how large each one should be, by amending the Parliamentary Constituencies Act 1986. It sets out a framework for future boundary changes and related matters. The bill is being considered in the House of Commons and is currently at Committee stage, introduced by Afzal Khan of Labour (Co-op).
The bill began in the House of Commons, completed the first and second readings, and has undergone extensive committee scrutiny in the Commons from 2018 to 2019. It remains at Committee stage.
In the 2016 second reading closure vote, MPs approved the bill by 257 Aye to 35 No. Labour (Co-op) and other non-Conservative groups largely supported the measure, while Conservative MPs largely opposed. Other parties’ positions varied, with some members voting in support and others not clearly recorded.
