The Schools Bill would give schools more freedom over admissions and expansion. It would allow schools to admit pupils based on published criteria, let them set their own maximum class sizes, and remove restrictions on expanding pupil numbers and on creating new schools. It also includes related provisions as part of its education policy changes.
The bill is currently at the second reading in the House of Commons. Amendments were debated at Report Stage in March 2025, with most amendments defeated and a few narrowly supported.
Across the eight recorded votes, Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs generally supported the bill, Labour (Co-op) MPs largely opposed, and others were mixed or split. Several amendments at Report Stage were defeated, though a small number attracted notable but narrow support.
