House of Commons
18 March 2019
The General Election (Leaders’ Debate) Bill would create a new Leaders’ Debates Commission to organise debates between party leaders during a General Election. It sets out how the commission should operate, what powers it has to arrange and run the debates, and how it should be funded and held accountable, with provisions to support these aims.
The bill is currently at the Second Reading in the House of Commons; if it passes, it will move to Committee Stage for detailed scrutiny, followed by Report and Third Readings before progressing to the Lords.
