A Bill to give effect to Law Commission recommendations relating to commencement of enactments relating to sentencing law and to make provision for pre-consolidation amendments of sentencing law
House of Lords
8 November 2019
The bill puts into effect the Law Commission’s recommendations about when sentencing laws start, and creates powers to make pre-consolidation amendments to sentencing law. It is aimed at tidying up the process before a full consolidation of sentencing rules into a single code.
The bill is at the Lords’ Report Stage; if amended and approved, it would move on to further stages in Parliament.
Generated 21 February 2026
The Bill was carried over to the next session, following a decision on 5 September 2019. This means the Bill can continue its progress through Parliament from the start of the current session. Formal second reading, Special Public Bill Committee and report stages for the current session took place without debate on 16 October.
Third reading, a chance to 'tidy up' the bill and make changes, is yet to be scheduled.
The 2017-19 Parliament dissolved at the end of the 2019 Session and this Bill will make no further progress
