This Bill would amend the House of Lords Act 1999 to remove the system that fills vacancies of hereditary peers by by-elections. Once law, vacancies would not be filled by elections among hereditary peers, so the number of hereditary peers in the Lords would decline over time.
The Bill was introduced in the Lords with readings in January and March 2020 and is currently in Committee stage.
