A Bill to amend the House of Lords Act 1999 so as to abolish the system of by-elections for hereditary peers
House of Lords
5 May 2021
This Bill would change how hereditary peers sit in the House of Lords by removing the system that lets them elect new members when a vacancy arises. It would abolish by-elections for hereditary peers, so a vacancy would not be filled by another hereditary peer and the number of hereditary peers in the Lords would gradually decline.
Currently in Committee stage in the House of Lords; further stages in both Houses will be required for the bill to become law.
