A Bill to make provision for the carrying out of the functions of the Prime Minister in the event that a Prime Minister, or a person temporarily carrying out the functions of the Prime Minister, is incapacitated; and for connected purposes.
House of Commons
5 May 2021
The Prime Minister (Temporary Replacement) Bill would set out how the Prime Minister’s duties are to be carried out if the current PM becomes incapacitated or if a person temporarily filling in cannot perform the role. It aims to ensure stable leadership by creating a formal process for appointing an acting Prime Minister and defining the powers and limits of that role. It also covers related arrangements to support continuity of government.
The bill is currently at the second reading in the House of Commons. If MPs approve the general principles, it would move to committee stage for detailed examination and then proceed to the Lords.
