A Bill to provide that persons charged with a criminal offence having been aged under 18 at the time of the alleged offence are subject to the jurisdiction of the youth court and to youth sentencing provisions; and for connected purposes.
House of Commons
6 May 2021
This bill would require anyone who was under 18 at the time of the offence to be dealt with in the Youth Court and to be sentenced under youth sentencing provisions. In effect, it moves young defendants away from the adult system and keeps their cases within the youth justice framework. It also allows related measures to accompany these changes.
The bill is currently at the Second Reading in the House of Commons. If it progresses, it would move on to further scrutiny and debate in later stages.
Generated 21 February 2026
The Bill failed to complete its passage through Parliament before the end of the session. This means the Bill will make no further progress.
