This bill would abolish the by-election system that currently fills vacant hereditary peer seats in the House of Lords by amending the House of Lords Act 1999. It would stop hereditary peers from being elected to replace those who die or retire, so the number of hereditary peers in the Lords would gradually shrink over time. Existing hereditary peers would remain in the Lords and the change would apply only to future vacancies.
The bill is currently at the 2nd reading in the House of Commons. If it passes, it would move on to committee stage, report stage, and third reading in the Commons, before going to the Lords for consideration.
