This Bill would add a new criminal offence to the Marriage Act 1949. It would make it illegal to purport to solemnise a marriage that has not been registered. In short, anyone who claims to perform a wedding that is not legally registered could be committing a crime.
The bill is at the very start of its journey, having just had its first reading in the Lords on 19 July 2022; it has yet to progress to the second reading or any committee stage.
