The Water Quality (Sewage Discharge) Bill would require stronger monitoring of water quality and set a target to reduce sewage discharges from storm overflows. It also introduces financial penalties for discharges and for failing to meet monitoring requirements, and obliges the government to publish a strategy to cut storm overflow discharges, including an economic impact assessment.
The bill is currently at the 2nd reading in the House of Commons. After this stage it would proceed to committee and further stages if it progresses.
