This bill would require the Sentencing Council to publish official sentencing guidelines for offences under sections 58 and 59 of the Offences against the Person Act 1861. The aim is to provide clear, consistent rules for judges and magistrates when deciding sentences for those offences. It does not change the offences themselves, but changes how they are sentenced by formal guidelines.
Currently at its first reading in the House of Commons. If it progresses, it would move through the usual stages of consideration (second reading, committee, report stage, and third reading).
