A Bill to amend the Housing Act 1988 so that long leases of residential dwellings are not deemed to be assured tenancies for the purposes of that Act; and for connected purposes.
House of Lords
29 May 2024
This Bill changes the Housing Act 1988 so that long residential leases are not counted as assured tenancies under that Act. In practice, this means people living in long leasehold homes would not have the protections that come with an assured tenancy under the Act. The change is technical and about how leaseholds are classified, not about creating new housing rights.
The Bill has been introduced in the Lords and is at the initial (1st) reading stage. It is supported by a Select Committee report and Explanatory Notes; it will proceed to the Second Reading and further stages in due course.
