The Arms Trade (Inquiry and Suspension) Bill would require the government to carry out an inquiry into how arms sold to foreign states are used, to check whether they breach international law. If it cannot be shown that the arms will be used lawfully, sales would be suspended immediately. The bill also provides for related measures to strengthen oversight of the UK arms trade.
The bill is at the 2nd reading in the House of Commons, having completed the 1st reading on 11 December 2023 and the 2nd reading on 19 January 2024. If advanced, it would move to committee stage and subsequent readings.
