The Consular Assistance Bill would give British citizens abroad a right to consular help in serious situations where their human rights are under threat. It covers cases where there has been or is risk of human rights abuses, denial of access to legal representation, or torture, and aims to set out what support consular services must provide.
The bill has completed its first reading and is now at the second reading in the House of Commons. If it advances, it would move to further stages such as committee and report stages before becoming law.
