This Bill would amend the House of Lords Act 1999 to end the system of by-elections used to fill vacancies for hereditary peers in the House of Lords. Once enacted, vacancies would not be filled, so the number of hereditary peers in the Lords would gradually fall over time.
The Bill has had its first reading in the Commons on 11 December 2023 and is presently at the second reading stage in the Commons; there is no information yet on progress in the Lords.
