A Bill to amend the House of Lords Act 1999 so as to abolish the system of by-elections for hereditary peers.
House of Commons
12 February 2025
This bill would change the law so that hereditary peers in the House of Lords can no longer be chosen by by-elections when vacancies occur. It would abolish the system of by-elections for hereditary peers altogether, so vacancies would not be filled and the number of hereditary peers in the Lords would fall over time.
The bill is at the 2nd reading in the House of Commons. If it passes, it would proceed to Committee Stage, then Report Stage and Third Reading in the Commons before moving to the Lords.
