A Bill to grant powers to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman to identify and investigate systemic problems in the benefits system and make associated recommendations to the Secretary of State; and for connected purposes.
House of Commons
12 February 2025
This Bill would give the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) new powers to identify and investigate systemic problems in the benefits system, not just individual complaints. It would let the Ombudsman study patterns across many cases and make recommendations to the Secretary of State to improve how benefits are run, with related purposes to support these reforms.
The Bill is at the 2nd Reading in the House of Commons, an early stage of passage. If it progresses, it would move to detailed scrutiny in Committee, then to Report and Third Reading before moving to the Lords for consideration.
