The Scottish Law Officers (Devolution) Bill would let the Scottish Parliament make laws about the roles and functions of the Scottish Law Officers (the Lord Advocate and the Solicitor General for Scotland). It amends the Scotland Act 1998 to transfer legislative competence in this area to Holyrood, giving Scotland more say over how these offices operate. In essence, it aligns the governance of legal officers with Scotland’s devolved powers, without immediately changing their day-to-day duties.
The bill is at the 2nd reading in the House of Commons, having completed the 1st reading in January 2024 and a second reading in March 2024. It has not yet moved to committee stage in this session.
