The Disabled Persons (Independent Living) Bill would require certain public bodies to support disabled people to live independently and would recognise an explicit right to independent living for disabled individuals. It also proposes changes to the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Health and Social Care Act 2008 to further support independent living for disabled people.
The bill started in the Lords in 2008 and progressed through Lords stages in 2009. It has since moved to the Commons and is currently at the 2nd reading, with further Commons stages to come.
