The Climate and Nature Bill would require the UK to set and meet legally binding climate and nature targets. It would place a duty on the Secretary of State to prepare and carry out a strategy to reach those targets, and it would create a Climate and Nature Assembly to advise on that strategy. It also places duties on the main climate and nature advisory bodies to help shape the targets and strategy.
The bill is currently at second reading in the House of Commons, having had its first reading on 21 March 2024. If it passes the second reading, it will proceed to committee stage and further readings in the Commons, before moving to the Lords.
