The Water (Agricultural Pollution) Bill would create rules to prevent and reduce water pollution caused by farming. It sets a regulatory framework for farming practices that affect water quality and gives regulators powers to monitor and enforce compliance. If passed, it would require farmers to take steps to protect rivers, lakes and groundwater from agricultural pollutants.
The bill had its first reading in October 2024 and is currently at its second reading in the Commons (as of 17 April 2026). After this stage, it will move to committee scrutiny and then further readings before becoming law.
