The Arms Trade (Inquiry and Suspension) Bill would set up a formal inquiry into how arms sold to foreign states are used, to check whether they breach international law. If it cannot be shown that the arms will not be used unlawfully, their sale would be suspended immediately. The bill also includes related provisions to strengthen oversight of arms exports.
The bill is currently at the 2nd Reading in the House of Commons (as of 17 April 2026), having previously had its 1st Reading. If it progresses, it would move on to Committee Stage and further readings.
