The Defamation Bill aims to modernise UK defamation law to better balance protecting people’s reputations with freedom of expression. It would clarify what counts as defamation and provide clearer defences for publishers, including media organisations and online platforms.
The bill is currently at the Lords, at the second reading (9 July 2010). If it progresses, it would move to committee stage in the Lords and then to the House of Commons for consideration.
