A Bill to make provision that persons receiving a training wage are exempt from legislation relating to the minimum wage; and for connected purposes.
The Bill would provide that anyone entitled to the national minimum wage, as defined in the National Minimum Wage Act 1998, would lose that entitlement if they had entered into a written contract of employment offering them a training wage and training from the employer in skills relevant to the employment.

This bill would allow employers to offer a training wage under a written contract, and would remove the national minimum wage entitlement for anyone who signs such a contract and receives employer-provided training in skills relevant to the job. In effect, workers who would normally be paid at the minimum wage would lose that entitlement if they enter a training wage arrangement with training linked to the employment.
The bill originated in the House of Commons and had its first reading in July 2010. It is now at the second reading stage in the Commons.
