A Bill to make provision to require certain public bodies to dispose of unused or under-used assets by public auctions; and for connected purposes.
The Bill would require central government Departments, executive agencies, non-Departmental public bodies, NHS bodies and public corporations to make an annual declaration of any of their tangible fixed assets that were unused on 1 January each year and the length of time those assets had been out of use. They would then be required to offer for sale at public auction any tangible fixed assets that had been out of use for more than one year.
The Bill would require central government Departments, executive agencies, non-Departmental public bodies, NHS bodies and public corporations to declare each year which tangible fixed assets are unused or under-used as of 1 January, and to record how long they have been out of use. If an asset has been out of use for more than a year, the Bill would require it to be offered for sale at a public auction. The aim is to help public bodies free up resources by selling idle assets.
The bill is currently at the second reading in the House of Commons, with the originating chamber being the Commons; it has not yet progressed to committee stage.
