A Bill to make provision for the United Kingdom to establish immigration controls for European Union nationals independent of the European Union
House of Commons
2 May 2012
This bill would let the United Kingdom establish its own immigration controls for European Union nationals, independent of EU rules. It would enable the government to create new visa and residency regimes for EU nationals and to decide who can enter or stay in the UK. In effect, it moves the UK away from automatic freedom of movement with the EU.
The bill is at the second reading stage in the Commons. If it progresses, it would move to committee for detailed examination, followed by further readings in both Houses.
