This bill would amend the Currency and Banknotes Act 1954 to allow banknotes issued by organisations other than the Bank of England to be legal tender, alongside Bank of England notes. In short, it enables non-BoE issuers to have their notes recognised by law as valid payment in the UK, subject to the Act’s rules. It also covers related regulatory and practical matters that would accompany any new note issuers.
The bill is currently at the 2nd Reading in the Commons, with its first reading having occurred in 2011. It would need to pass through further stages (committee, third reading, Lords) to become law.
