A Bill to apply the terms of the European Union Act 2011 such as to require approval by Act of Parliament and by referendum of provisions for creating a fiscal union or economic governance within the Eurozone.
House of Commons
2 May 2012
This bill would amend the European Union Act 2011 so that any proposal to create a fiscal union or other eurozone-wide economic governance would need both an Act of Parliament and a nationwide referendum before it could take effect. In effect, it raises the hurdle for future eurozone economic integration by requiring public consent as well as parliamentary approval. It does not itself introduce new policies, but changes how such measures would be approved in the UK.
The bill is at the 2nd reading in the House of Commons and would need to progress through further stages (Committee, Report) and obtain Lords consent before becoming law.
