Under the Bill, medical treatment that a doctor says is necessary must be provided by the NHS unless that treatment is not approved by the Secretary of State or NICE. It would also create a national register of cases where prescribed treatment is refused and establish an appeals process for decisions about providing such treatments, along with related provisions. The aim is to strengthen patients’ access to treatment and to track and review refusals.
The Bill is currently at the second reading in the House of Commons. It originated in the Commons, with its first reading on 20 December 2011.
