A Bill to make provision about the property of deceased persons who are survived by a cohabitant.
House of Lords
30 April 2013
This Bill would set out how the property of someone who dies is to be dealt with when they are survived by a cohabitant (a partner they live with but who is not married or in a civil partnership). It aims to recognise and protect the rights of surviving cohabitants to a share of the deceased person’s estate, beyond what is covered by a will or current intestacy rules. The exact details are set out in the Bill’s provisions.
The Bill is currently at the second reading in the House of Lords, meaning peers are beginning to debate its general principles. If supported, it would proceed to further stages in the Lords and then to the Commons for consideration.
